Week 2 Story Planning: The Loyalty of Brothers

Reading Notes:
  • I like the the relationship between Lakshmana and Rama- the loyalty of all four brothers
    • Lakshmana is willing to follow Rama into the forest
  • Jatayu- A eagle who can speak like a human and pledges himself to Rama (Dies saving Sita) could be interesting to mix this with Harry Potter

I made these notes after reading the entire story. One thing that really stuck with me after reading the story is how much loyalty the brothers had to one another! Lakshmana was willing to leave behind his wife and life to go with Rama into the forest. He did this to protect Rama. When Bharata realized that his mother had exiled Rama, rather than side with his mother he set off to make things right with Rama. After Rama had served his exile Bharata willingly gave up the throne to Rama. While all of these things are impressive by themselves, together they show a strong bond between the brothers.

Story Ideas

  1. My first possible story idea is to make the brothers each of the founding houses at Hogwarts! I would rename the houses in accordance to the prince they are named after. I think this would fit into the theme of the loyalty of brothers because the houses at Hogwarts would show the unity between brothers.

    1. For Rama I would make his house animal the eagle, named after the golden eagle who pledged himself to serve Rama until he died saving Sita.
    2. For Lakshmana I would make his house animal the Tiger, because he is loyal and protective of Rama.
    3. For Bharata I would make his house the elephant, because he is patient and steady in his devotion to Rama and to the people.
    4. For Shatrughna I would make his animal the monkey, because he follows after Bharata.

  1. The next story I have considered doing is a showdown between the brothers. The three brothers, Shatrughna, Lakshmana and Bharata would have to compete to win the top advisor position to Rama. While it is obvious that Rama would pick Lakshmana, he makes it a competition to keep it fair. The downside to doing this kind of story, is some of the background of each character might have to be forfeited for the sake of time.
    1. They could compete in the traditional sports of India

  1. I absolutely love your Hogwarts idea! I am a big fan of Harry Potter, and this is something that is so unique. I also liked the bond the brothers had. I admired that instead of fighting for the throne, they were always willing to help each other out more. I think the Hogwarts idea will flourish, because they are united but in their own way, each house is different. I cannot wait to see what you do with your story!

  2. Hi Katie,

I absolutely love your Hogwarts idea as well! This would be a completely new story that I feel like you could do a lot of cool things with. I also did a story planning this past week, and reading your planning post also opened my eyes to a new way of looking at this assignment. I am looking forward to seeing what you do, and what story idea you end up choosing!
