Feedback Thoughts

I really enjoyed the article the Difference Between Praise That Promotes Narcissism vs. Healthy Self Esteem by Ponci Rutsch. This article talks about the right way to praise someone, which I think is important in classes like this. Even if you don't like or agree with someone's work you can still evaluate it. If you think they spent a lot of time on it you can tell them that it looks like they put a lot of work into the story. This is important because it encourages people to keep trying rather than to just give up.

While I enjoyed the articles that told me how to give feedback, the ones I really focused on were the ones that told me how to receive feedback. I am one of those people who sometimes get defensive when I receive feedback. I chose to read the article 5 Tips For Taking Feedback Like a Champ by Megan Bruneau, because before I even looked at the article my mind was going, "I want to be a champ!." I really liked the layout of the article and found all of the tips really helpful! My favorites were, "Remind yourself that having growth areas is a good thing-it means you haven't maxed out on your potential." I really connected with this one because it reminds you that doing something wrong or not perfectly allows you the opportunity to grow. This is important to remember when trying something new. The next one I really enjoyed was "Keep in mind state vs. trait," if you remember that this is just a place you need to grow and improve on and not a lack of skill or talent, you will feel less like a failure and more like a champ!

The next article I read was, Why Rejection Hurts So Much - and What To Do About It by Guy Winch. I am personally someone who doesn't take rejection well, so I knew this article would be really beneficial for me to read! I liked what it said about the hurt we feel from rejection is self-inflicted. I never stopped to think about the idea that the main part of rejection is what we personally feel. While the article doesn't tell you how to prevent being hurt or rejected, it does highlight the fundamental part of overcoming it. To overcome rejection just remember that there will always be another opportunity and another chance for you to shine. One of the biggest things they highlight is to remember the good in every situation.

The last article I read Be a Mirror: Give Readers Feedback That Fosters a Growth Mindset by Gravity Goldberg. In this article the author highlights the five main concepts that must be touched on in order to foster growth mindset. The concepts are "be specific, to focus on what the reader is doing (not on what is missing,) make sure it can transfer, focus on the process and take yourself out of the feedback." These were all really helpful when thinking about the best way to respond to other student's comments.

Overall, I learned a lot from the articles. One of the most important things I learned was to take yourself out of the comment, "while it is sometimes okay to say, "I like" if you use "when you did this" it puts the focus more on the student. The most important thing to remember when you are the one receiving the feedback is to see it as a growing experience, just because you aren't there now, doesn't mean you never will be.

Week 2 Story Planning: The Loyalty of Brothers

Reading Notes:
  • I like the the relationship between Lakshmana and Rama- the loyalty of all four brothers
    • Lakshmana is willing to follow Rama into the forest
  • Jatayu- A eagle who can speak like a human and pledges himself to Rama (Dies saving Sita) could be interesting to mix this with Harry Potter

Source Story
I made these notes after reading the entire story. One thing that really stuck with me after reading the story is how much loyalty the brothers had to one another! Lakshmana was willing to leave behind his wife and life to go with Rama into the forest. He did this to protect Rama. When Bharata realized that his mother had exiled Rama, rather than side with his mother he set off to make things right with Rama. After Rama had served his exile Bharata willingly gave up the throne to Rama. While all of these things are impressive by themselves, together they show a strong bond between the brothers.

Story Ideas

  1. My first possible story idea is to make the brothers each of the founding houses at Hogwarts! I would rename the houses in accordance to the prince they are named after. I think this would fit into the theme of the loyalty of brothers because the houses at Hogwarts would show the unity between brothers.

    1. For Rama I would make his house animal the eagle, named after the golden eagle who pledged himself to serve Rama until he died saving Sita.
    2. For Lakshmana I would make his house animal the Tiger, because he is loyal and protective of Rama.
    3. For Bharata I would make his house the elephant, because he is patient and steady in his devotion to Rama and to the people.
    4. For Shatrughna I would make his animal the monkey, because he follows after Bharata.

  1. The next story I have considered doing is a showdown between the brothers. The three brothers, Shatrughna, Lakshmana and Bharata would have to compete to win the top advisor position to Rama. While it is obvious that Rama would pick Lakshmana, he makes it a competition to keep it fair. The downside to doing this kind of story, is some of the background of each character might have to be forfeited for the sake of time.
    1. They could compete in the traditional sports of India

Reading Notes: Ramayana Part Two

  • For Reference
    • Sita is the avatar of goddess Lakshmi
    • Rama is the avatar of the god Vishnu
      • now has the Bow of Vishnu given by Varuna (ocean god)
    • Lakshmana is married to Sita's younger sister, Urmila
  • I like the the relationship between Lakshmana and Rama- the loyalty of all four brothers
    • Lakshmana is willing to follow Rama into the forest
  • Jatayu- A eagle who can speak like a human and pledges himself to Rama (Dies saving Sita) could be interesting to mix this with Harry Potter
  • I really want to explore the concept of dharma in my stories. I really like the idea of a cosmic order
  • Hanuman- was an interesting character! I liked that he was so strategic when visiting Ravana. Instead of fighting being paraded through the city he was analyzing the layout of the city to help Rama.
    • It would be fun to do a story that featured Hanuman
  • Vibheeshana to me is an unsung hero. Even though he is Ravana's brother he tries to help Sita and ultimately joins Rama's army
  • It is ironic that Rama ends Ravana's life with a weapon from Brahma, who is the creator of all things

Reading Notes: Ramayana Part One

For this week's reading I choose to read the novel version of the Ramayana. I love reading novels because I feel like they are able to go so much more in-depth into the story, which will really help inspire my writing!

Wikipedia lists the different characteristics that Rama "Morality, Virtue, Ideal son, Ideal king, Ideal student, Ideal teacher, Ideal brother, Ideal husband, Ideal man"
  • I think idea for the character of Ravana is really interesting and could potentially make a good evil character for a India Horror movie. I think it is interesting that it is a demon that ruins holy places, it sounds a lot like the beginning of The Exorcist to me
  • Vishnu could be an interesting character to explore. What I would like to possible do for a story is have Rama be visited by the different gods who "train" him for his destiny (to slay Ravana)
    • Rama is the avatar of Vishnu
    • Four boys born from the gods: Rama, Bharata, Lakshmana and Shatrughna
  • Viswamitra is like Rama's Virgil. Would be interesting to have a Virgil versus Viswamitra battle.
  • Tataka-basically a women who was turned into a demon because she tried to seduce a holy man. She now is like a vampire
    • why is killing her the only way to break the curse? Do they not believe in redemption
    • rakshasas would also make a great villain or evil character
  • If Maricha was purified with Rama's arrow why did he also have to be killed?
  • Kaikeyi is an interesting character. It is interesting that she is so worried about what her maid tells her to do, in terms of casting Rama out
  • I really enjoy the love story between Rama and Sita. I think that she is willing to support him through anything. Their story would be a really interesting thing to focus on
  • The Bow of Sita (which Rama lifts) is the equivalence to Excalibur in Arthurian Literature
  • Manthara says that Rama will advance the interests of his own mother, Kausalya, and may even kill Kaikeyi and her son Bharata- She acts like the devil on the queens shoulder-Leading Kaikeyi to use her two wishes to make the king exile Rama
